Leonardo DiCaprio has worked in the entertainment industry for more than three decades and has never once failed to compel his audience with his immaculate works. But throughout his journey of becoming a thoroughly established and widely reputed icon in Hollywood, DiCaprio realized one of the biggest mistakes of the film industry: their repeating mistake of misrepresenting Native Americans.
To be more precise, he has grown so tired and frustrated with this constant ongoing cycle, that Leonardo DiCaprio now aims at fixing this one major fault of Hollywood through his upcoming Martin Scorses drama/crime film, Killers of the Flower Moon.
Leonardo DiCaprio Is Fed Up With Hollywood’s Habitual Mistake Of Misrepresenting Native Americans
Leonardo DiCaprio is of the opinion that Hollywood has a lot of work to take care of in regards to its past portrayals of Native Americans on the big screen. Talking to Vogue UK, he shared how frustrated he is with this mistake of the film industry that has become a habit now.
“Hollywood has a long history and chequered past in its depiction of Native American people,” DiCaprio said. “We need to do more. You know, we are coming towards a great reckoning of our past. The more that these stories can be told in a truthful way, the more it can be a healing process.”
However, that’s not all: being the terrific actor he is, Leonardo DiCaprio has finally found his way to fix this one mistake through his upcoming Martin Scorsese film, Killers of the Flower Moon.
Leonardo DiCaprio Might Fix This Mistake In His Upcoming Martin Scorsese Movie
During the same interview, both Leonardo DiCaprio and his co-star from Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone talked details about their upcoming film. Back when the Midwestern Native American tribe of Osage found a way to earn passive income through oil and became rich from it, several white Americans weren’t all too pleased about it.
Among the whites was Ernest Burkhart (played by DiCaprio), ‘a compelling mix of unwitting privilege and thoughtless desire.’ He, at the encouragement of his uncle Bill Hale (played by Robert De Niro) who is a prominent businessman acting as an ally to the Osage, married an Osage woman named Mollie (played by Gladstone). This led to the planning of a sequential murder of her family with the help of local outlaws and corrupt officials.
This event saw the killing of so many Osage people for their ‘headrights’ that it is widely remembered by the Midwestern Native American tribe as the period of the Reign of Terror.
“It’s not that long ago that the Reign of Terror happened,” Gladstone said. “I don’t want to label this a Western. I’m happy that it’s being labeled a tragedy.” Dicaprio added, “It’s a completely forgotten part of American history and an open wound that still festers.”
Martin Scorsese‘s Killers of the Flower Moon is set to hit the theatres by the 20th of October, 2023.
